STRATEGY FOR RECREATION

INTRODUCTION

The Forest Service has a unique "niche" or brand of nature based recreation to offer. This brand of recreation includes an undeveloped setting, a built environment that reinforces this natural character, and an array of services that complement enjoyment of these special places.

KEY ELEMENTS

We alone cannot bring existing facilities to an acceptable standard, nor invest in new facilities that meet changing customer demands or reduce environmental impacts. We will partner with volunteers, non-profits, other agencies, and the private sector. In addition, we will fully employ tools such as contracts, permits and fees to maximize available resources.

Services should enhance and complement the Forest Service "brand" of outdoor recreation.

We will welcome recreation and tourism industries, environmental interests, and state and tribal governments to join us in discussions regarding future uses of the national forests and grasslands. We will look for ways to maintain a collaborative dialogue.

We will train Forest Service personnel to become knowledgable of business parameters such as marketing research, profit and loss, contract and permit administration.
